Making the Switch to Safer Skincare & Beauty Products

Do you ever wonder what kind of ingredients go into your skincare, makeup and other personal care products and even products for your kids? Do you know there are so many harmful ingredients in the products we use these days that’s contributing to health issues such as hormonal imbalance, infertility and even cancer? Prolonged usage of these harmful ingredients can slowly build up the toxic in our bodies and eventually cause problems.

I have recently been introduced to a new brand of skincare product called Beauty Counter. Now I am going to start by saying that I have never been a fan of MLM (multi-level marketing) products. In fact, I am pretty cynical about it. However, the quality and ethics of this company has really surprised me, in a good way. Now I am in love with the brand and I feel so good using products that are safer and cleaner.

Why did I decide to switch to Beauty Counter? Let me backtrack a bit to give you some history on my skin so you will understand.

Since the age of 13, I have suffered through various skin conditions. I battled through acne, rosacea and extreme sensitivity. I used so many acne treatments and products including the “famous” Proactive. I tried Chinese medicine, Japanese and Korean skincare, masks of all kind, regular facials at spas, and I even got injections on my acne and eventually took birth control pills. I also used a lot of makeup to help cover up the breakouts. Thinking back, I really regret all the damage I have done to myself as now I know that all these products and treatments not only had a negative effect on my skin but also on my health as it caused a lot of hormone imbalances and reliance on the medication.

After years of using different acne products and makeup to cover up, my skin became so thin that even though the acne was mostly gone, my skin became super sensitive. It was red all the time and easily irritated. I tried various products for the redness and sensitivity and nothing really helped that much. Things got better after I had kids, in fact it was glowing throughout pregnancy and when I was breastfeeding, but after I stopped breastfeeding, all the problems came back and I had some episodes of extreme dryness. No matter how many masks I used, how much lotion or oil I put on my face, it was so dry and blotchy that I didn’t want to touch or even look at myself in the mirror.  That’s when I started to look more into using clean and natural skincare products. Over the years, I had tried a number of natural and organic brands such as Jurlique, Clinic, Weleda, Juice Beauty, Kiehls, Philosophy and so many more. They are all good brands and products but nothing really gave me amazing results except for Beauty Counter.  I understand everyone is different and will have different results with each product so I’m not bashing any other products but just sharing my experience for those who might be interested.

I was given a set of BC products to try out for a week from a local Beauty Consultant. I did some research on the company and products before taking the samples. From my research I found many good things were said of BC products from reputable sources such as Allure Magazine and beauty bloggers. I was still cynical but I thought I would still give it a try.

After a week of trying the products I decided to make my first order. After a month using the products, I felt like I have a different skin, it is so much smoother, firmer and feels just healthier in general.

Here is a review of some of the products I have tried:

No. 1 Brightening Facial Oil

The No. 1 Brightening Facial Oil is my absolute favourite and is one of BC’s best-selling products that has even won an Best of Beauty Award from Allure Magazine and had lots of good reviews. The oil features 7 types of natural oil. It absorbs really quickly into the skin and leaves your skin super soft and dewy. It’s rich but not at all heavy. When I woke up the next day, my skin felt really silky and smooth. I didn’t notice much brightening effect at the beginning but after about a month using it, I noticed that some of the spots I had are looking more faded. I think I love this oil more for its moisturizing and skin softening benefits. I highly recommend this oil for those looking to quench your thirsty skin.

Countermatch Intense Moisture Serum

I also got the Countermatch Intense Moisture Serum. This serum is infused with two forms of hyaluronic acid, this serum absorbs quickly and delivers immediate and lasting hydration, while vitamins C and E provide antioxidant protection and improve skin radiance.

It feels light and silky when you apply it. I love that it is not too heavy yet makes your skin feel very balanced. I find that some serums leave your skin feeling sticky, this one does not at all. I use this only in the morning because I already use the oil at night (you can also combine the two if your skin is really dry). After a few weeks of using it, my skin felt so much firmer and smoother and brighter. If you are looking for a serum, then you should definitely try this one.

I got this lotion as a welcome gift for join the membership. The membership was only $29 but the lotion is $60 so I figure that’s worthwhile because with the membership I got free shipping when I purchased over $125 and also product credits for the next purchase. There is a different welcome gift each month, so take advantage of it.

This lightweight lotion helps your skin to adept to the environment by adjusting hydration level throughout the day using a breakthrough bio-mimic technology. I like it because it is glides on my skin and is not heavy yet gives me enough hydration for the day. It makes my skin really smooth and bright. When used with the serum, it gave me even better result. Using BC products almost felt like giving a detox to my skin, my skin felt so much healthier after a month of using it.

I also have tried a number of other products including the Charcoal Cleansing Soap and Overnight Peel which I will review separately.

What I love about the company

What I love about Beauty Counter is that the company proactively raises the standards to develop skincare and beauty products with safety in mind. It has a “Never List” which is made up of approximately 1500 harmful or questionable ingredients that that BC prohibits from their product formulation. The company has a mission to get safer products into the hands of everyone and  is actively lobbying to change the industry standard, so that we don’t have to suffer from the harmful ingredients hidden in personal care products we apply on our skin every day. BC chooses the best, organic, natural, sustainable, and synthetic ingredients. Over 80% of ingredients are natural and plant-derived. The company is so confident of their product that they even offer a 60 day full refund policy. That means if you don’t like the products you purchased you can return it even if you have used it! That is a huge reassurance when it comes to trying out new products.

So what does this all mean?

After using BC for over a month, I have finally decided to introduce it to everyone because like I said I am very cynical about MLM companies and I am very careful when choosing my affiliations as a blogger.  I only choose reliable companies and I only recommend products that I have used and truly love. It was a bit of a struggle for me to decide to join BC because I just never wanted to be associated as a sales person, but the products are so good that I just can’t stop telling people about. I want all my families and friends to start using safer personal care products as there are just too many harmful ingredients in the products we use these days. It’s not just about selling skincare and beauty products, it’s about becoming a change agent in the current landscape of personal care products.

Feel free to check my Beauty Counter website out and if you are interested in trying some products and live in Markham areas, I am happy to lend out my kit for you to try out. Just contact me on Instagram or Facebook. I highly recommend giving this brand a try. And I understand skincare can work differently for everyone, but the good news is if the product did not work for you,  you can ship it back for full refund, BC will even pay for the shipping. I am confident that you will fall in love with the brand just like me.

  1. I love my countermatch serum and lotion too. The lotion has a light almond scent, big contrast to my old lotion (an European brand I got from my spa) that has a strong perfume smell. Can’t wait to read your charcoal bar review, it’s a new favourite of mine 🙂
